Cats in the Park

I give this cat plenty of room as I walk past.Cats are usually fun. Most of the time they run when I chase them, but not always.

When I see a cat in one of the parks where I walk, I don't chase right away. I stand at attention and kick the grass so they know I am serious. If they don't move, I bark a couple of times to get their attention and move forward. When they run, I go after them. It is great fun even though I almost never catch them.

This is a cat I caught once. But he turned around and hit me with a claw.

This cat thinks he owns this part of the park.

Then it chassed ME! AND caught me. I had to run behind my human before it stopped. Thank goodness there is no video of that since it would be very embarrassing if Gabe and the rest of the pack saw it.

Now when I see him, I give him plenty of room as I walk past.

Meet Tommy, the Pack's Newest Member

Tommy has moved in with Sersha and Jake. At first he was a little shy but now that he knows his way around he is a fun guy, the life of the pack!

Yesterday Tommy, Gabe and I played "King of the Table". It was really fun since I won. Just kidding, play is always fun!

There are six of us now on our morning walks. There is always someone who wants to chase. We have a great time.

Foxy, Always the Gentleman

We all like Foxy very much. He is cheerful and quick with encouragement and words of wisdom for us younger dogs. We see him across the park from time to time and every couple of weeks our paths cross and we get to chat.

Foxy joins us for a snack

Foxy is always welcome to join us in a snack. Usually we don't like to have dogs from outside the pack getting our treats, but we think of him as an honorary member.

Lydia Finds Some Cool Mud

Today the weather changed. The morning was very pleasant but the afternoon was downright hot! I went to Shetler Park with the grass and trees for shade, but Gabe and Lydia went to Alston Park!

Lydia had the right idea. After taking care of business, she found a muddy spot near the drinking water and lay in it until it was time to go home. Gabe took a picture and sent it to me.

Lydia keeping cool in 93-degree weather

There is lots of space at Alston Park but most of it is out in the sun, very dry and very hot on a day like this. All the gophers are deep in their nests and who has the energy to dig anyway?

Full Moon Euphoria

Last night the moon was full and the sky was clear. It was beautiful and I slept outside letting my inner wolf run free in my dreams.

Full Moon over Napa Valley

As wonderful as my estate is, it is surrounded by bushes and fences and I did not get to enjoy the full moon until it was high in the sky. That's why I was so happy when I checked my email and found that Gabe had sent me a picture of the moon rising over Alston Park.

Gabe is SO thoughtful!

Balloons Strike Again

Our morning walks have been balloon free until a couple of days ago when one of those nasty, noisy monstrosities landed right in our path.

Get off our lawn!!

I am hoping that this is a one-time event. It seems that there was some kind of mating ritual going on. The male on the ground held up a sign so the female would know who to go to, or something like that. They both were sure happy about it.

Tico is visiting the pack this week.

Tico is a youngster visiting Gabe and Lydia. He has been coming with us on our walk every morning this week.

He is great fun to romp with. And when we get down to the serious business of finding gophers he joins right in. We were sorry to have him go back home.

Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts

I am a social animal. One of the things I like about getting out of the house a couple of times a day is meeting other dogs. I like to read about them too. One of the best books I have read is Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts by Lucy Dillon.

Lost Dogs and Lonely Hearts by Lucy Dillon

Gem is a Border collie in charge of a boarding kennel that also finds homes for rescue dogs. Two of those are Lulu, a Poodle, and Bertie, a Basset Hound. Add Toffee, a lovable Labrador puppy and lots of bacon sandwiches to the mix and you have the makings of a lively and interesting story.

There are big changes going on and Gem has all he can do to keep the kennel running smoothly. In the process we learn a lot about the people around our main characters. The story has a happy ending with Gem's efforts and steady guidance paying off. The kennel thrives despite the drama surrounding the people.

Gabe and Lydia Sleep In

I walk every morning with Gabe, Lydia, Jake and Searsha. Gabe and Lydia have their own driver and they always park in the same spot. When I get there before they do I wait for them so I can give them a proper greeting.

Waiting for Gabe and Lydia

I REALLY look forward to seeing them. Yesterday I waited and waited and waited, but they didn't come. I guarded the spot so it would be there for them. Eventually Jake, Searsha and I went walking, but I looked back several times to check if they had come.

Gabe and Lydia Dig for Gophers

I love hearing the stories that Gabe tells about the hunting that he and Lydia do at Alston Park. There are many, many gophers in the grass at the top of the hill. Gabe and Lydia are catching them on a regular basis.

I love digging too, but I can't go there. Everything catches in my coat and I worry about foxtails too much to really have fun. I had to go to the vet twice in ten days last year and it was no fun at all.

I still love hearing the stories. Gabe is a truly gifted story teller. He makes me feel as if I was right there with them. And even better, their guy Rick sent me this video of the fun.

Greta Comes to Visit

Jake's cousin Greta is staying with him for a couple of weeks. She was a bit shy when she first met the pack at the park. Now she is starting to join in the fun when we chase crows or just run in circles.

Suds Up For Fun

That's what the sign says at Pet Food Express. Really, that's what it says!

News flash!! IT IS NOT FUN!!

Just as I am getting my coat smelling good after a grooming session at Pet Cuts, I am taken for a wash. It seems to make my people happy so I endure it. But I don't have to like it. At least it is over with quickly.

Dog Survival Guide

Dear Gabby,

I read your book and am happy to say that I have it good. Or rather, HAD it good. My problems started when I took you advice and left the book in the reading room so they could see how great I am compared to some of your garbage-eating furniture-chewing readers.

Every Dog's Survival Guide to Living With a Neurotic Owner by Steve Duno

They read the wrong parts of the book! Suddenly there are no more offers of delicious food from the table. My "starving dog" look doesn't work. Even sure-fire tricks such as resting my chin on a leg or cute vocalizations are getting NOTHING!

Today I found myself on-leash after being slow to come. I was really was planning to come when I was done investigating a gopher hole. And worst of all, I have to sleep in a bed on the floor, not the soft and warm king-size I am used to.

Life is still great, but I am not feeling like the queen anymore. What can I do to reclaim my position as leader of the pack?

Take her out, Mr. Saavik.

I am a big Star Trek fan. I have seen all of the movies and TV shows. As we start away from home I sometimes pretend to be in command of the Enterprise.

All the places I like to go for my morning and afternoon walks require some driving. This is because I don't like to be distracted by having to keep my person on a leash as I have to do on the streets near my home.

There are four parks I go to for walks. Sometimes I just ride along on errands so my human won't get lonely and anxious being away from me.

A break in the rain

I get out of the house a couple of times a day if at all possible. One of my favorite places to go is down by the Napa River.

I really like the marshy area south of Napa.
